South Carolina agencies aim to promote safe environment

People planning a trip to the Edisto River this summer will be met with an increased police presence as several area agencies will team up to crack down on criminal violations this summer. The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, Colleton County Sheriff's Office, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Colleton KEYS will be teaming up to dissuade criminal violations along the popular river.

Some areas where the task force will be focusing its efforts include littering, underage drinking, public drunkenness/disorderly conduct, malicious damage to property and indecent exposure. Colleton KEYS will play a large role in helping to enforce these laws this summer. This particular community coalition was created to help address the underage drinking issue in Colleton County. Typically, Colleton KEYS supports high visibility enforcement operations such as these River Operations to help bring awareness to the underage drinking problem in the county.

Aircraft, watercraft and vehicles will be used in this summer's effort to clean up the Edisto River. A growing concern for agency officials is the high water level and fast current of the upper Edisto River. Typically, this section of the river has a slow current, but this year the current is increased because of the high water levels. To help prevent any alcohol related accidents in the river, the task force will aim to eliminate any of these criminal issues before they become a major problem.

Underage drinking is often a concern of law enforcement officials, especially in popular locations such as the Edisto River. In order to provide a safe family environment, law enforcement officials have to crack down on underage drinking by handing out citations. If you are given a citation for underage drinking, a lawyer can help reduce your penalty by entering a plea bargain on your behalf. Since underage drinking is not a serious offense, a plea bargain can be an excellent way to have your charges reduce or even dropped altogether.
