Drunk driving charges for South Carolina man in fatal wreck

Four counts of felony DUI were lodged against a South Carolina man who, police say, drove the wrong way on I-385 and crashed head-on with another car, killing its driver and injuring her three children. The drunk driving charges included one count of felony DUI involving death, as well as three counts of felony DUI involving great bodily injury.

The coroner said that the 26-year-old woman was driving on the Interstate with her children, all under age 9, when the 26-year-old truck driver collided with her vehicle head-on. Police were unsure how long the man had been driving his truck the wrong way on the highway before the wreck. The woman was killed, and the minors in the car with her all received injuries in the accident. The driver of the truck was reportedly told about the accident when he was in the hospital receiving treatment for his own crash injuries. He was said to have no memory of the accident, but he expressed remorse over what he was told happened.

Authorities received two 911 calls with reports of a vehicle going the wrong way on the highway and one call reporting the accident. The woman killed in the crash was reportedly just 15 minutes away from home when the wreck occurred. The woman's husband was driving in a separate car and was talking to his wife on a cell phone at the time of her accident.

DUI and DWI offenses can mean fines, license suspension and a jail sentence. Individuals accused of misdemeanor DWI, aggravated DWI and felony DUI might find helpful the services of an attorney experienced in DUAC and DUI defense. Such a lawyer may be able to negotiate a plea bargain for lesser charges and penalties.
