South Carolina man involved in bar altercation charged with DUI

A man who police say they were following on suspicion that he had been involved in a bar fight was ultimately taken into custody on DUI charges. According to police, the man admitted his involvement in the bar altercation but denied he had been drinking.

In the early morning hours of Nov. 29, police say they were looking for a vehicle driven by a man who reportedly had used a gun and knives to threaten patrons at a Myrtle Beach bar and grill. At around 1:30 a.m., the vehicle was located speeding on 38th Avenue North.

Police stopped the driver at a gas station where he admitted to the incident at the bar, but he said he had not been drinking. Officers say there was a marijuana smell in the man's vehicle and that his breath smelled of alcohol. The man was given a field sobriety test and taken into custody. Breath analysis at the Myrtle Beach Jail revealed a blood alcohol content of .16 percent.

The impact drunk driving charges and convictions can have on a person's life can be life-range and damaging to personal and professional life. In addition to being exposed to possible incarceration, people accused of drunk driving risk losing the privilege of driving or having that privilege severely restricted. Some may be barred from patronizing social events and venues where alcohol is sold and served while others could be required to install alcohol monitoring devices on their vehicle to prevent them from drinking and driving.

Among the factors courts consider to determine the appropriate penalty for the offenses charged will be the documents in the court record. People accused of drunk driving will want to ensure that the court's record is complete, correct and reflective of all facts related to the DUI event. A DUI defense attorney may be able to negotiate for a lesser charge by ensuring that any mitigating evidence is included in the court record.
