Drunk driving charges for man after single-vehicle crash

A South Carolina man is being charged with drunk driving and causing serious injury months after police allege that he was hurt in a crash involving just a single automobile. The man, according to reports, suffered various injuries along with his passenger when the vehicle overturned.

On Dec. 28, 2013, a 26-year-old man was driving north with an unidentified passenger on the Old Ninety Six Highway in Greenwood. Around 2:45 a.m., the man allegedly lost control of his vehicle, a 1997 Chevrolet. Police claim that the man drove off of the right side of the highway and into a ditch. The car then overturned in the ditch. Police claim that neither of the occupants were wearing seat belts at the time they say the crash occurred.

Reports indicate that the driver and passenger were taken to Self Regional Medical Center for treatment. Their injuries were severe, including facial lacerations, broken bones and internal injuries. Police claim that a blood alcohol test was performed on the driver while he was in the hospital. According to their allegations, the man was operating his vehicle while intoxicated. Charges have now been filed against the driver for driving under the influence in connection with the great bodily harm suffered in the single-vehicle crash.

The man is facing a felony if the charges are not properly defended, which could include a jail sentence of more than a year, heavy fines and other penalties. When charged with a crime such as this, an attorney who has experience defending against drunk driving charges may be helpful in conducting an investigation of the evidence. The attorney may then be able to reduce or eliminate the charges through successful plea bargaining or defense at trial.
