Driver facing felony charges in South Carolina crash

A 27-year-old man allegedly caused a crash on May 23 that killed a 24-year-old female on Highway 378 in Marion. According to police, the man was driving west on the highway when his vehicle collided head-on with a Mustang being driven by the woman around 1 a.m. The woman died at the scene while a passenger in the Mustang was taken to Grand Strand Medical Center for treatment of what were called serious injuries.

The man who reportedly caused the accident was booked at Marion County Detention Center and was charged with two felony counts of driving under the influence. He was also charged with one count of driving without a license. Highway 378 near Pee Dee Bridge had to be closed for seven hours following the crash.

A driver who is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol usually faces penalties such as jail time, a license suspension and fines. In addition, penalties such as community service, probation and educational classes may be required. Depending on the blood alcohol content that the driver is accused of having, he or she may be required to use an ignition interlock device in any car that the driver wishes to operate.

Anyone who is facing DUI penalties may wish to hire legal counsel to help avoid those penalties. A DUI defense attorney can negotiate a plea bargain to get charges reduced or certain charges against the driver dropped. A plea agreement may allow a driver to do community service or spend time on probation instead of serving time in jail. It may also allow a driver to retain his or her driving privileges after the case is resolved.
