Man sentenced to 8 years for 2012 DUI

South Carolina motorists who find themselves facing DUI charges may be interested in knowing the outcome of a felony drunk driving case involving an Anderson man. News sources say that on May 7, the 43-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to drunk driving charges stemming from a chase and subsequent collision that happened in August 2012. In addition, his driver's license will be suspended for three years once he is released from prison. Sources did not indicate if the man was represented by counsel in court.

According to the prosecution, the man's blood alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit when he struck a Cadillac traveling on S.C. 254 at Bypass 72. The driver of that vehicle suffered severe injuries as a result and has since undergone several surgeries. Prior to the crash, the intoxicated man led highway patrol troopers on a high-speed chase down the bypass while reaching speeds in excess of 90 mph.

The man pleaded guilty to failure to stop for a blue light resulting in great bodily injury and felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury. In court, a number of people from his current residence, the Faith House, spoke on his behalf. However, the severity of the victim's injuries as well as the defendant's prior history of alcohol-related offenses were noted by the judge as factors for the sentence.

Some individuals might feel that they have no recourse in court other than pleading guilty to drunk driving charges. However, the penalties for a conviction could be harsh, and there are a number of DUI defense strategies that could be effectively used to contest state's evidence in some cases. Before taking further action, a charged driver may find it beneficial to ask an attorney for a legal assessment of their case.
