South Carolina police launch campaign to deter drunk drivers

According to reports, police in South Carolina have launched a campaign on Aug. 22 entitled Sober or Slammer, and it is expected to run through until Sept. 1. The campaign's goal is to raise awareness about the consequences of DUI in South Carolina in addition to trying to prevent impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol estimates that one person is killed each day on average by a drunk driver. During the first few days of the campaign, reports say that law enforcement in Horry County had detained approximately 46 individuals for DUI.

Overall, officers took 27,000 people into custody for DUI in 2013. A report from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety says that nearly half of all fatal accidents in the state involved a drunk driver.

The penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol can range from jail time to hefty fines. For those who have been convicted of DUI in the past, a complete license revocation may be imposed for a subsequent conviction. Other penalties could include house detention, probation and community service. Those who are convicted of a DUI may also have to disclose this fact when applying for jobs in the future or to their current employer.

Talking to a DUI defense attorney may be worthwhile for anyone who wishes to dispute a drunk driving charge. For instance, an attorney could challenge the allegations by questioning the validity of a traffic stop if there was no reasonable cause to prompt officers to initiate one. Additionally, he or she might also raise questions about breath test results if the testing equipment was not adequately maintained.
