South Carolina Mayor charged with DUI

In a Nov. 29 incident, the mayor of McColl was detained after being apprehended on High Street. Mayor George Ray Grier allegedly failed a field sobriety test and refused breath testing, according to reports. He has been charged with DUI as a result. Reports indicate that after being charged, the mayor was released on a personal recognizance bond of $997 the following day.

Although the mayor reportedly declined commenting on specific questions posed via telephone requests, he released a statement to area news sources. In the statement, Grier noted that he had made a mistake. He indicated that he drank more than he realized at a local football game and that he attempted to reach his home a half mile from the stadium. In his statement, he apologized for the situation.

Drunk driving charges can be damaging to an individual's reputation, especially for someone who holds a high-profile position. In a similar case, an individual might choose to consult with an attorney prior to making any statements to the press in order to avoid complicating their defense. In addressing news interviewers, a statement formulated under the guidance of an attorney might provide a means for acknowledging a situation. Further comments might be avoided to prevent additional evidence from being created in a situation.

An individual who works with an attorney to limit penalties by negotiating a plea deal might choose to remain silent about such a matter until the case is finalized. Because each case is a unique situation, the defense strategy may also be uniquely determined based on issues such as a defendant's prior record or lack of record related to similar incidents. Additionally, a defendant's record of contributing to the well-being of a community might serve as a point for seeking leniency in a first offense.
