Children of South Carolina mother placed in state custody

In South Carolina, as is the case throughout the United States, decisions on child custody are centered on the well-being of the child or children involved. This means that they will be placed in the custody of whichever parent is deemed to be able to provide them with the best and most stable quality of life. If neither parent is considered fit, the children may be placed into foster care or have a separate guardian appointed.

In one case, a South Carolina mother has lost custody of her children after allegedly driving them into the ocean. She has been placed involuntarily in a hospital to receive treatment for possible mental health issues as she has been reported to have had multiple psychotic episodes. The three children who were with her during the alleged incident have been placed into state custody.

The woman also gave birth to a fourth child after her arrest. This baby has been placed in the custody of the father. After two days of testimonies the woman was found not guilty of child abuse via the insanity defense. Her attorneys are now fighting for her to receive outpatient care rather than being kept in the hospital.

Cases like this are difficult and often deeply distressing for all involved. The safety of children must come first. However, that does not diminish the emotional trauma experienced by this mother and her children at being separated from each other.

If you are concerned about custody issues, you might benefit from the support of an attorney. He or she can advise you about your options and may be able to support you as you fight to retain custody of your children and prove your suitability as a parent.
