South Carolina arrested for DUI on tractor

When we talk about drunk driving arrests, many people automatically assume the person was driving a car or a truck. And while these do make up the majority of driving under the influence arrests in South Carolina, it's important to remember that it is illegal to operate anything -- a boat, tractor, motorized lawn mower -- when under the influence.

One 48-year-old of Conway, South Carolina, is learning this the hard way, as he was arrested for drunk driving on a tractor. The tractor had earlier been reported stolen by the City of Conway. It had been left by a job site and reported missing the next day. However, it is not clear if the same man who was arrested riding it was the same person who stole it.

His arrest took place around 1:30 a.m. on Highway 38. The man had supposedly been out on a little joy ride on the tractor when police pulled him over and accused him of being under the influence. While he was presumably taken to jail, the tractor was taken to the Truck Service Center of Florence. It sat there for almost a month after initially being stolen.

In the meantime, the City of Conway had offered a $1,000 reward to anyone that could provide information that would lead to the tractor. Once it was discovered what happened, the tractor was picked up and hauled back to the city where it belongs.

Looking to the future, for this 48-year-old man, he may find himself having to deal with quite the hassle, as the DUI laws in South Carolina are rather complicated.

For starters, it is going to have to be proved that not only was his blood alcohol content higher than 0.08 percent, but law enforcement will have to prove that he was driving under the influence and that his driving was significantly impaired.

In general, every DUI case is different. Like in this one, the man was supposedly driving a tractor. But, in other cases it could be a car, motorcycle or boat. Defense options will typically vary depending on the facts of the case.
