South Carolina woman accused of three-car crash

A woman was taken into custody May 15 on suspicion of causing a three-car accident in North Augusta. The 24-year-old individual was allegedly driving a Honda Civic at the time of the accident. According to the investigators at the scene, the woman is accused of hitting another vehicle during a traffic stop.

While stopped at the light on Martintown Road at Georgia Avenue, she then allegedly rear-ended a Honda Fit. The driver of the Honda Fit then hit a Honda Odyssey. However, she was charged with driving while intoxicated or DWI offense because she was allegedly under the influence of prescription medications.

Currently, the woman is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center on the misdemeanor charge. However, the charge could be upgraded to a felony pending her urine test results. Also, an upgrade could occur depending on any injuries sustained by the driver of the Honda Fit. The 31-year old driver and her two infants, who were in the vehicle at the time, were taken to the hospital. According to investigators, their injuries aren't life-threatening. The other driver wasn't injured.

Right now, the outcome of the cases is not known and she hasn't appeared at a preliminary hearing. Although the woman is receiving a lot of media attention because of the three-car crash, she is not convicted of any DWI offense. Drivers arrested for DWI or driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) must face a trial in court, not public opinion. There are many viable defenses to present at trial when accused of a DWI offense.
