South Carolina man charged with DWI in deadly accident

A South Carolina man is facing DWI charges after being involved in an accident that killed his friend. The deadly accident occurred on a South Carolina highway shortly before midnight on August 24, 2013.

The 21-year-old male driver of a 2000 Jeep was traveling Northbound when he reportedly attempted to pass another vehicle. As a result of an apparently unsuccessful passing attempt, the vehicles collided right before the Jeep left the roadway and flipped. A 21-year-old female passenger who was allegedly not wearing a seatbelt was then ejected from the Jeep. She was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries reported.

While reports indicate the driver of the Jeep initially identified the deceased as his relative, he later indicated she was a close friend. Furthermore, while the wreck remains under investigation, the driver was initially taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence. He posted bond shortly after being taken to a nearby detention center.

Consequences of a DWI conviction alone can result in life-altering circumstances. However, a DWI conviction accompanied by a fatal accident could result in felony charges. If charged with a felony, a person may face long-term driver's license suspension, hefty fines and/or time in jail. After reviewing the circumstances surrounding an arrest, an attorney with experience handling DWI offenses may be able to suggest a course of action, which may include requesting that prosecutors drop charges or agree to reduced penalties. Contacting an attorney as soon as possible may help the client have a stronger defense.
