South Carolina teen receives bond in fatal accident case

A South Carolina high school student appeared at a bond hearing on Aug. 16 in connection with a fatal car accident that occurred last summer on Highway 101 in Greer. He is facing drug and drunk driving charges and was given a $50,000 bond at the hearing. The teenager's license will be suspended for 60 days, and he is required to wear an ankle monitor and submit to drug testing as conditions of his bond.

The accident took place on July 24, 2013, at approximately 5 a.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The teen was driving a Jeep Cherokee when he crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Dodge Ram head-on. The driver of the Dodge was pronounced dead at the scene. The teenager was airlifted to a regional medical center with serious injuries where he stayed for 11 days.

Tests performed at the hospital indicated that the young man had alcohol, benzodiazepines, marijuana and methamphetamine in his system at the time of the accident. Speed also seems to have been a factor, as he had been going 60 mph in a 45 mph zone, according to the 7th Circuit solicitor.

Anyone facing serious charges such as vehicular homicide and DUI may face life-changing consequences if they are convicted. A skilled DUI defense lawyer might be able to minimize such damage by negotiating for a plea agreement. If this is a first offense, the prosecution may be open to exchanging some charges or penalties for a guilty plea and a commitment to seek drug and/or alcohol treatment. In some situations, the attorney may suggest a trial. During the court proceedings, an attorney may present a defense argument on behalf of the defendant. If the client is convicted, the attorney may also file an appeal.
