Woman shows up at school intoxicated

A 39-year old woman from South Carolina was taken into custody after allegedly driving while intoxicated and nearly crashing into another vehicle when she went to pick up her child from Silver Lakes Elementary School. The mother of three is facing drunk driving charges after failing three field sobriety tests. The incident took place on the afternoon of Sept. 16. According to police, the woman was pulled over after an officer observed her run over the plastic lane markers in the pickup line at the school.

The woman allegedly stated that she was under the influence of neither drugs nor alcohol, but the officer reported that she appeared disoriented and her speech was slurred. He also noted that she had to rely on leaning against her vehicle to keep her balance when she got out of her car. During field sobriety tests, she was reportedly unsteady on her feet and was unable to touch the tip of her nose.

According to the report, the odor of alcohol was clearly coming from the woman once she was in the back of the police car. The woman allegedly refused a breath or urine test and was taken into custody for driving under the influence. In spite of the fact that a judge released the woman without requiring bail, he is having the Department of Children & Families check on the woman's children. She is also to be randomly checked for drugs and alcohol.

The impact of being convicted of a DUI cannot be understated. Jail, fines and loss of driving privileges are all common penalties. A lawyer could help someone ensure that their rights were not abridged and defend them in court against their charges.
