Driver charged with DUI, not having South Carolina license

A driver who carried a Mexican driver's license is facing several drunk driving charges, according to police reports. On Dec. 8, 2013 at approximately 12:30 a.m., Santee police were alerted by a person who claimed to have seen a reckless driver. According to the police, the citizen reportedly saw a white model Ford truck driving "on the wrong side of the road" and "all over the road." The person stated that the truck was headed eastbound on Bass Drive in the direction of Highway 6 in South Carolina.

The Santee police officer followed and pulled the Ford truck driver over by the town's General Store. The officer claimed that he smelled alcohol as he approached the truck and that the driver appeared to be very intoxicated. He then requested the driver to come out of his vehicle. Because of the rain, the officer directed the driver, a man in his 30s, to take the field sobriety test under a nearby canopy. The driver also later consented to a Breathalyzer test at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Law Enforcement Complex.

Among the charges the man faces are driving without a driver's license from South Carolina and DWI. As of the time of this news brief, a date for the man's hearing has not been set.

Individuals facing DWI charges, whether it's a DWI first offense; a DWI second offense; an aggravated DWI or felony DWI may experience serious, potential consequences as a result. Hefty fines, a license suspension and even a jail sentence are some of the penalties involved. Because every DUI case is different, it is vital to have legal advice and help in order to possibly obtain lesser charges or avoid trial if there is mitigating evidence or if one's rights were violated.
