South Carolina auto passenger killed in suspected DUI crash

A 22-year-old Bluffton man was killed in an accident on Jan. 28 as he was riding in an automobile as a passenger. A representative for the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the accident, a single-car wreck, occurred at about 9:20 p.m. near the entrance to the Lakes at Myrtle Park apartment complex on Bluffton Parkway.

The man killed was the lone passenger in a maroon 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse being driven by a 22-year-old male. As the driver was headed east, the car struck a raised median near the entrance to the apartment complex. The vehicle then crashed into a tree located off the main roadway where it came to rest. Due to the apparent force of contact with the tree, both the driver and his passenger became trapped inside the car. The passenger was killed. The driver was taken to Memorial University Medical Center for emergency treatment. Both men were said to have been wearing seat belts.

Upon his release from the hospital, the driver was charged with felony DUI. Weather conditions were not considered to be a factor in the accident.

People who are convicted of DUI often face the possibility of their lives being permanently scarred by the conviction. When facing a DUI charge, it may be a wise decision to seek the advice of a criminal defense attorney. When a judge is considering the determination of guilt, he or she will take many factors into account. Any prior convictions for similar offenses, the reliability of blood testing equipment and the procedures followed by the police can all play a role in the court's decision. An attorney, after a thorough review of the evidence against the person who was charged, may be able to provide a successful plan for a DUI defense.
