DWI driver's father dies in South Carolina crash

A woman has been taken into custody by authorities and charged with felony DUI after a crash on the evening of March 22 that killed her own father and injured four occupants of another vehicle. She was also charged with having an open container in a motor vehicle, felony DUI with great bodily injury and driving under suspension.

A South Carolina Highway Patrol representative stated that the accused was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck northbound at approximately 6:55 p.m. on Highway 45. Another driver was traveling in the same direction in a GMC Yukon. The Yukon's driver decelerated in order to make a left turn off of the road, and the Chevy's driver tried and failed to pass the vehicle in a no-pass zone, sideswiping the Yukon and sending both vehicles into a ditch.

The coroner for Berkeley County stated that the 67-year-old father of the accused driver was riding in the passenger seat of the Chevy at the time of the crash. He was killed at the scene due to blunt trauma to his body. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. Four occupants of the Yukon were admitted to a local hospital after the accident, but their medical condition was undisclosed.

A person in or near Clemson facing drunk driving charges due to an incident in which he or she took the life of a family member may feel an extreme sense of guilt, but that person is still entitled to legal representation. A DUI defense attorney may be able to help such an individual move forward in life by attempting to shift the court's ruling from being strictly punitive to being more rehabilitative in nature. An attorney could do this by highlighting their client's good community standing or clean record.
