DUI charges in South Carolina accident

A 33-year-old Mount Pleasant man has been charged with felony DUI and two counts of leaving an accident scene involving personal injury. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on June 13. Construction crews were reportedly paving the road in the area when a pickup drove through the construction area close to the guard rail and struck two workers, according to witnesses.

When authorities arrived on the scene, one of the injured workers was reportedly lying on the ground in blood. He had difficulty answering questions and was allegedly going in and out of consciousness. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated for facial trauma, head trauma and broken ribs. He is expected to survive. The other injured worker indicated that he was suffering from shoulder pain and was taken to a medical center to be evaluated and treated. Officials patrolled the area in search of the pickup, eventually detaining the driver. According to state records, this was the first instance of drunk driving charges for the man.

As the driver faces court proceedings related to the charges, it may be helpful to enlist the help of a DUI attorney. An attorney may be able to use the man's lack of prior incidents to negotiate less severe penalties through a plea deal. Prior to considering plea arrangements, a lawyer may want to review reports of the incident to verify that the rights of the man had been observed throughout the process.

An experienced attorney can make an important difference in a DUI defense. While the implications of a conviction may be severe, an attorney may be able to lessen the severity of the outcome.
