Man arrested in alleged DUI collision

A 24-year-old South Carolina man is facing charges of felony DWI resulting in death after hitting and killing a cyclist in front of a Goodwill store. The cyclist, a 33-year-old man, died before he could be transported to a hospital. The driver continued traveling for a few blocks after the collision, but he then walked back to the site of the accident.

Police who talked to the driver at the scene of the accident allegedly found that he was intoxicated. Using a search warrant, they obtained a blood sample that they said confirmed their initial assumption.

The driver is currently being held in a South Carolina jail on a $25,000 bond. Reports did not disclose his court date or the blood alcohol concentration allegedly found in the blood sample.

In cases where a driver is accused of driving under the influence and a person is killed as a result, the driver may face considerable charges. A felony DWI conviction can result in license revocation, prison time and heavy fines. When a driver is accused of felony DWI, it may be beneficial to consult a lawyer who has experience with DWI defense. A lawyer may send investigators to the scene of the accident or hire an accident reconstruction team to develop a clear idea of what happened at a given accident site. An experienced defense lawyer may also be able to work with the prosecution and judge in order to secure a plea bargain, which would require the defendant to plead guilty to fewer or reduced charges in order to obtain less severe penalties.
