Many teenagers waiting to be adopted in South Carolina

Whether it is through birth or adoption, welcoming a child into your family is a wonderful thing. Across the United States there are many children in need of homes, but fortunately there are also many families keen to provide them. However, in South Carolina, it appears that most families prefer to adopt a younger child. This is bad news for the many teenagers waiting to find their forever homes.

According to one adoption specialist in South Carolina, out of 606 families approved for adoption in the state, only 72 were willing to take on children aged 13 or over. A 16-year-old who has spent most of his life in the foster care system says he thinks people are just unwilling to deal with the problems they perceive a teenager to be likely to have.

To be approved for adoption, you will need to go through an application process that can take between three and six months. The Department of Social Services pays for inspections, background checks and even training, in order to ensure that children go to safe, loving homes. It can take a long time for the system to match you with a child, but ultimately it can transform that child's life.

The adoption process may seem a little daunting, especially as there is no definitive timetable for being introduced to a child. However, it is more than worth the time and effort. If you are unsure of the process or want to know more about your options, you may find an attorney has the answers you need. With the right guidance, you can chase up any loose ends and work toward preserving a future for yourself and your newly-extended family.
