Almost $1 million child support collected every day

Throughout the United States, including South Carolina, thousands of parents are required to pay child support. The amount expected from them depends on a variety of factors, but at the heart of the matter is the provision of sufficient financial support for their children. Raising a child can be expensive, so the child support system aims to arrange a manageable sum to be paid each month by the parent in question.

So prevalent is this that the Department of Human Services in one state alone collected an average of almost $1 million of child support per day in a year's time, ending June 2014. Of course, although this highlights the sheer amount of child support being paid, it may not be a true reflection of the amount owed. Many parents still attempt to dodge payments, running up massive debts.

Others struggle to meet their payment obligations, especially following a sudden change of circumstances. Illness, a change of job or any number of other events can impact an individual's earning potential and make it difficult to keep up with monthly payments. Unfortunately, this can lead to legal trouble for the parent, while the child remains without the financial support he or she requires.

Falling behind with child support can be worrying, especially if you know that the requirements are beyond your means. An attorney could be helpful if you find yourself in this position. He or she can advise you on the options available and may be able to assist you in negotiating a modification to your arrangement.
