Know what to do if your child is abducted

There are many former couples in South Carolina who do not see eye to eye. However, most do their best to get along for the benefit of their children. They may not agree with each other's decisions, but it is easy to assume that each believes they have the child's best interests at heart. However, for some parents the custody arrangement does not work out the way they hope. They find themselves unable to spend the amount of time they wish with their children.

Others simply feel resentment toward the child's other parent and want to hurt them, or prevent their child from seeing them. Whatever the reason, some parents become so desperate to alter the situation that they abduct their own children. Some simply take them home, or to the next state. Others flee the country altogether. Whatever the case, it is extremely distressing for the other parent.

If your child is taken from you, it is important to report the matter immediately. As is explained here, the abduction is also likely to be a breach of your custody arrangement. The abductor could face criminal charges, fines, prison and even a loss of custody or visitation rights. Of course, the most important matter is having your child returned safely.

This can take time and is a distressing experience to endure. This is even more the case if your child has been taken abroad, as international custody disputes can be drawn out and difficult. Whatever the case, you could benefit from the support of an attorney. He or she can advise you about the laws relating to abduction and may be able to assist you in securing your child's safe return.
