Micheal Phelps resolves DUI case

South Carolina residents may be interested to hear that Olympic swimmer Micheal Phelps has pleaded guilty to DUI. He was originally taken into custody on Sept. 30 near the Fort McHenry Tunnel on I-95 in Baltimore. Police say that he crossed double lines and was going approximately 84 mph in a 45-mph zone in his 2014 Land Shark Rover.

When police made contact with Phelps, he was asked to perform routine field sobriety tests. He reportedly did poorly on the tests, which led to Phelps being taken into custody. Police say that he was cooperative throughout the entire process. He was formally charged with DUI, excessive speed and crossing double lane lines. A judge gave him a one-year suspended sentence in addition to 18 months' probation on Dec. 19, and Phelps entered into a treatment program after being taken into custody.

It was the second time that he had been charged with a DUI. In a 2004 case, he received a $250 fine as well as 18 months' probation. USA Swimming suspended the swimmer for six months following the incident. During sentencing, he told the judge that he made a bad mistake and was looking toward his future.

Those who are charged with a DUI may wish to hire a DUI defense attorney to dispute the charge in court. If the evidence of intoxication is compelling, opting for a plea bargain may be the best line of defense against the prosecution's case. This may allow a driver to avoid stricter penalties that may otherwise harm their career.
