New law requires federal review of U.S. adoption agencies

Adopting a child can be a wonderful experience and is a fantastic way to offer a child a fresh start and a chance at a happy future. Many adoption agencies are extremely diligent and focused on the well-being of the children in their care. However, it is an unfortunate fact that there are also unscrupulous organizations who effectively traffic children, abducting them from their families.

Fortunately, in a move to combat these terrible practices, a new law was introduced in July 2014, under which all U.S. adoption agencies are legally required to undergo federal review. They are not permitted to facilitate the adoption of children from other countries by American families until they have been accredited following the review.

It is a vital step and one that has been due for many years. Illegal adoption agencies harm not only the children and the families from which they are taken, but also the adoptive families who may face the heartbreaking discovery of the truth, or even discover that the child they have adopted and raised is not legally theirs.

Unfortunately, it is a system that is all too easily exploited. Kind-hearted families hoping to do something positive and fulfilling get sucked in by agencies purely concerned with profit. However, under the new legislation, there is hope that these immoral practices will subside.

Adoption is a fantastic thing when it is done within the letter of the law. An attorney can advise you on your options and ensure that you are thorough and protected as you progress through the adoption process.
