Hundreds of children wait for foster homes in South Carolina

Families come in many shapes and sizes. Children may grow up with both parents or only one, while others are removed from their birth parents altogether and are either placed into foster care, or go to be adopted. However, it is not as simple as it sounds. All too often, there are not enough homes to accommodate all the children, leaving many of them waiting for years at a time.

In South Carolina, it is an issue that is all too prevalent. Some counties barely have enough foster homes to house even a quarter of the children who need one. In the meantime, these children live in group homes, at greater cost to the state and often at great detriment to the child's long-term well-being.

No matter the conditions of their upbringing, it can be a highly traumatic event for a child to be taken from his or her family. If they then enter a loving foster home, some of this hurt can be undone. However, for those children left waiting, the instability and uncertainty of their lives can lead to diminished grades, behavioral issues and future challenges.

However, there are all too few families willing to accommodate an unknown child. For those that are, it is often a rewarding experience. Meanwhile, new training classes have been developed to help foster parents learn to cope with the potential difficulties of their role.

If you are considering fostering or adopting a child, it is important to ensure that the process is completed accurately. An attorney may be able to help you with this and ensure that you reach a fair agreement that protects both you and the child.
