Keeping up with child support does not need to be a chore

Many couples in South Carolina do not remain together, even if they have children. Not all relationships work out and often it is healthier to move on and have a fresh start than to remain in a situation where you are unhappy. This can be even more the case if you have children, as exposing them to an unsettled home environment can be detrimental to their happiness and well-being.

Most parents want the best for their children, so even if they separate, the chances are that they still hope to provide for those children as much as they are able. This is where child support comes in. A monthly sum is determined which is to be paid, usually by the non-custodial parent to the custodial parent. This money is intended to ensure the child receives all the financial support needed for a happy, healthy upbringing.

Of course, circumstances can change and a sum that seemed fair when the arrangement was made may not be feasible if you become ill or lose your job. Unfortunately, falling behind on your payments can get you into legal trouble, so on top of your mounting debts, you could face criminal charges. Meanwhile your child is not receiving the support he or she deserves.

Fortunately, it is often possible to have the monthly agreement reconsidered to take your new circumstances into account. This means you can start working your way out of debt and making the support payments on time. Our page on child support has further information. Furthermore, an attorney can advise you on your options and may be able to assist you with negotiating a fair arrangement.
