Fight back if your child support goes unpaid

Many children grow up in South Carolina in the care of only one of their parents. Of course this does not mean that they cannot have just as full and happy a life as a child in a two-parent family. Even so, raising a child can be expensive and it is often a struggle for a single parent to cover all the costs related to their child's needs. Fortunately, the child support system aims to ensure that children receive the financial support they require.

Even in the case of parents who take no part in their child's life, the child support system often requires a monthly payment to be made to the child's custodial parent. The amount is generally determined by the means of the parent paying and modified by any existing support debt he or she may have for that child.

Sadly, not all parents keep up with their monthly obligations, leaving their child's custodial parent out of pocket and struggling to make ends meet. If you have noticed that the payments you are due to receive have stopped coming in, it is important to report the matter as soon as possible so the problem can be rectified.

Our page on child support has more detailed information on the options available to you and what to expect from a child support hearing. If you have any concerns regarding payments or the amount that has been set, an attorney may be able to advise you. He or she may also be able to assist you if you decide to pursue a modification to your child support arrangement.
