A 26-year-old woman was sentenced to six years in prison on May 27 after pleading guilty to a count of felony DUI. She was charged after causing an accident in January of 2013 when her car drifted off the road on Interstate 526. As she attempted to return to the road, her car struck a Jeep being driven by a 35-year-old male.
A 22-year-old Bluffton man was killed in an accident on Jan. 28 as he was riding in an automobile as a passenger. A representative for the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the accident, a single-car wreck, occurred at about 9:20 p.m. near the entrance to the Lakes at Myrtle Park apartment complex on Bluffton Parkway.
A Sumter police officer reportedly rescued a motorist from a lake after the man's car had gone off the road and into the water. The officer says that he originally stopped because he saw two cars parked on a bridge with their hazard lights on. When he got out of his car, he realized that there was a third car in the water with the motorist trapped inside.
A man who police say they were following on suspicion that he had been involved in a bar fight was ultimately taken into custody on DUI charges. According to police, the man admitted his involvement in the bar altercation but denied he had been drinking.
